#061: Galaxie 500 - unreleased sessions and live at The Rat

This is a cassette sent to me in the mid 90s by someone from The Galaxie 500 Mailing List in, I’d guess, 1995 since it has some of the tracks that later turned up on the box set… as well as some stuff that didn’t. I can’t remember who sent...

Recent acquisition #02: Britta Phillips & Kramer - Nocturnes

Here’s another release that doesn’t fit my criteria but I’ve decided that having both Britta and Kramer is enough to push it past the “direct relationship to a former member of Galaxie 500” rule - 2 x 2 hops = 1 hop Britta Phillips & Kramer - Nocturnes I nearly...

#060: Pee Shy - Yellow Race Car

Dean doesn’t often venture into production - this was an early outing, I think it was recorded at the same time as Pee Shy’s Who Let All The Monkeys Out album (which will turn up later in this series) and released before the album on Tampa, FL indie Screw Music...

#059: Galaxie 500 - This Is Our Music

So, we arrive at another copy of This Is Our Music, and another limited edition release I didn’t get on first release. This is a CD in a card slip-case and a fancy tri-fold card sleeve. Uniquely† the CD also has a different sleeve, without the portraits and without the...

Recent acquisition #01: Luna The Days of Our Nights (LP)

Inevitably, my record collection was likely to grow during the course of this series. Initially I’d shuffle everything around to find a place for any new arrivals but it seems easier to just squeeze them in as extras, otherwise I may never finish! Earlier this month Luna’s difficult fifth album...

#058: Dean Wareham - Luna demos

Dean Wareham’s first post-Galaxie 500 demos have a bit of a release history… I guess more than most demos, but this was the first time they had been collected and released in a physical form, and an absolute beauty of a package it is. Dean Wareham - Luna Demos The...

#057: Magic Hour - Will They Turn You On or Will They Turn on You

And this series continues to be Magic Hour top-heavy with their sixth appearance, and the second appearance of their second album, this time the CD that I bought on release. Magic Hour - Will They Turn You On... The album was, according to the sleeve, “Recorded Summer/Autumn 1994” however three...

CD sleeve for On Fire 30

On Fire 30

It turns out 1989 was an amazing year for music. It was for me anyway my life was changed in so many ways that year. Galaxie 500’s On Fire was one of those ways. It entered my life on one side of a C90 cassette and hasn’t left my life since. In spring of 2019 I had an idea that something needed to be done to celebrate 30 years of that life-changing occurrence.

This is what came of that idea.
