Fourth of July competition: The runners up…

Thanks to everyone who entered or thought about entering the A Head Full of Wishes competition. In the end there were four entries – all were wonderful and choosing a winner was really hard and I wanted to make everyone a winner but sadly I don’t have enough stuff to give away! I do have some copies of Luna’s Dear Paulina 7″ so if any runners up want a copy give me a shout…

2010 winner 'No bigger than a nickel' by Ro

Back in 2008 I launched a new competition for art about or inspired by Galaxie 500′s track Fourth of July. The first year was met with embarrassing silence and a grand total of zero entries. For 2009 I decided that the lack of a prize may have contributed to the competition’s pathetic failure and decided to offload some duplicate CDs to the winning entry… and sure enough egged on by some of my off-casts the number of entries soared and the competiton was so fierce that in the end I made both entries winners!

So… welcome to year 3 of the AHFoW Fourth of July contest. The winning piece of art will, once again win a collection of crap that I have around that will probably include a couple of CDs and anything else I may be able to rustle up between now and then [prize donors welcome].

The Rules

Create a piece of art about or inspired by the Galaxie 500 song The Fourth of July so, for example, it could be…

Poems about dog biscuits
Photos of poems on dog biscuits
Photos of small Empire State Buildings…
… or large nickels

The lyrics are in the database and the song is in a million places on the internet – go hunt it down… and let your imagination run wild.

If entries are so copious that I have to categorise them they will fall into two broad categories…

Visual art (e.g. paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, videos)
Everything else (e.g. poems, stories, songs)

The winner will be chosen by me and my family and will be based on a number of criteria, most of which will have more to do with what makes us laugh (or cry) than jaw-dropping artistic-brilliance (although that would be appreciated too of course). It’s just for a laugh so have some fun.

Entries in email, or as links to web sites (e.g. blogs/Flickr/YouTube etc.) or in the comments here if you prefer!

Competition closes on 3rd July and winners will be announced on the 4th.

Luna’s Swedish Fish in book promo video

Dean Wareham on Crazy Rhythms

Dean Wareham has written about his love for Crazy Rhythms by The Feelies in Delusion of Adequacy's latest feature in their Artists on Albums series…

I came home from a record store on West 8^th St, placed this on the turntable and was hooked from the opening seconds of “The Boy With Perpetual Nervousness,” which creeps in slowly with lonely percussion and a couple of strummed strings before the whole band finally hits after at the one-minute mark.

Dean Wareham plays Galaxie 500 in Atlanta… in September

A show billed as "Dean Wareham plays Galaxie 500" is taking place at The Earl in Atlanta, GA on the 17th September. I'd hazard a guess that this is not, as suggested on the promoter's MySpace page "the first time in 20 years" but similar to the Dean & Britta Galaxie 500 shows in New York, Castellon and Paris in the last couple of years. Still a not too common occurrence. Tickets are on sale now at $18 and given current Pitchfork love for Galaxie 500 and the fact that they have just plugged this show it might be worth getting your tickets in advance!

Dean & Britta 13 Most Beautiful T-shirt coming soon

Designer Frank Orlinsky, who has worked a great deal with Luna and Dean & Britta over the years, has posted pictures on his site of a new poster and T-shirt that he has designed for Dean & Britta to coincide with the CD/digital release of the music from 13 Most Beautiful in the summer.

Dean & Britta to perform Homeward Bound for Summerstage 2010

Britta confirmed in a post on Facebook that the duo will be performing a cover of Simon & Garfunkel's Homeward Bound at this year's Central Park Summerstage on 8th June

This year’s benefit will feature the songbook of Simon & Garfunkel with unique duets performed by Shawn Colvin, Aimee Mann, Dar Williams, Loudon Wainwright III, Lucy Wainwright Roche, Joan Osborne, Stephen Kellogg, Dean & Britta, Cory Chisel, The Holmes Brothers, John Forte, Valerie June, John Roderick, Ricky Skaggs, Willie Nile, Paula Cole, Alejandro Esovedo, Ollabelle (house band) and many more.

Dean & Britta – 13 Most Beautiful 7″ single

The Great Pop Supplement web site mentions a forthcoming 7" single – details and release schedule seems sketchy but…

a special 45 with dean wareham and britta phillips. 2 tunes from a specially commissioned project from the warhol museum / estate where soundtracks were created for each of warhol's legendary "screen tests" (subjects such as nico, edie sedgwick, dennis hopper, lou, dali, dylan, ingrid superstar etc.) in booklet sleeve, w/warhol artwork granted permission for use for the project.

Dean & Britta also have a double CD release of the soundtrack to 13 Most Beautiful planned for release on Double Feature Records Update: Scheduled for release 27th July

An oral history of Galaxie 500 on Pitchfork

Pitchfork has just put up a lengthy oral history of Galaxie 500 featuring interviews with all the key players in the band's history. I'm only a couple of pages in so eager to see how it turns out! Here's a couple of choice snippets I've come across so far…

Kramer (Galaxie 500 Producer/ "Fourth Member"): To be perfectly honest, when they first came in and played for me, I thought these kids must be lying. There's no way they went to Harvard; they sounded so fucking retarded! One chord for an entire song, played that slowly? Come on!

Naomi Yang: I think one of my fondest memories of being in the band was when we were opening for the Sundays in England and Harriet [Wheeler] lost her voice and cancelled the London show at the last minute. Rough Trade scrambled to get a gig for us in London that night and came up with a pub; I think it was called The Falcon. It was packed and instead of the big stages that we had been playing with the Sundays we were back to being in our usual atmosphere of a tiny sweaty rock club. It was a really relaxed and completely fun gig– it just felt like we were cut loose from music business responsibilities and could just play music! I guess the music going well was always at the center of my best memories.

An early Luna show has just turned up on Dimeadozen, Recorded at the Opera House in Toronto in 1993 while the band were supporting the Sundays. Setlist includes a cover of Galaxie 500's Blue Thunder. You need to register to download.

Dean & Britta bring 13 Most Beautiful to London

Dean & Britta are finally bringing 13 Most Beautiful to London. The show featuring the band playing in front of a selection of short films made by Andy Warhol, will have its London debut at The Barbican on 30th July. Tickets go on sale on Thursday 29th April at £15 and £20.
