Guitrarrorists was a compilation of solo guitar pieces curated by Kramer and released on No.6 Records in 1991. Contributions came from such indie lumninaries as Thurston Moore, Steve Albini and J Mascis. I listened to the whole album a few weeks back and must admit I found it mostly heavy going.

Dean Wareham’s contribution is this nice little number entitled West Broadway. Enjoy.

Dean and Lou have a drink together

Quick post to wish a Happy Birthday to Dean Wareham, who reaches 46 today. Anyone in the area can spend the day celebrating with Dean at the Celebrate Brooklyn festival in Prospect Park from 7:30 or at The Bell House in NYC from 10:30. If not… you can grab a bottle of coke and drink to him. That’s what I’ll be doing.

Free 13 Most Beautiful show, followed by a free after show party this Saturday

On Saturday Dean & Britta will be performing 13 Most Beautiful at the Prospect Park Bandshell in Brooklyn as part of the Celebrate Brooklyn festival. Support comes from Crystal Stilts. The show kicks off at 7:30 and is free (but probably worth the suggested £3 $3 donation). Afterwards Dean & Britta will be heading down to the Bell House in New York City for an evening described on the Bell House website as having “special DJ sets and drink specials” – two specials in one sentence… should be good. The party starts at 10:30 and goes on into the early hours of Sunday.

Don’t forget to wish Dean a happy birthday – he reaches the grand old age of one-year-older-than-me on Saturday.

Dean writes about scoring 13 Most Beautiful

Dean Wareham has a in-depth article on the BOMB Magazine website detailing the process of selecting and scoring the Warhol Screen Tests used in 13 Most Beautiful.

I came home from the museum with a reel of about 40 Screen Tests, and we started thinking about music, watching individual Screen Tests, throwing different pieces of temp music at them, sometimes a cover or a half-finished song we had sitting about, and sometimes picking up guitar and keyboard and trying to conjure something simply as a response to the subject’s actions on screen. Narrowing the selection to 13 was difficult. We had to let go of a number of great subjects—Ivy Nicholson, Imu, Amy Taubin, Salvador Dalí.

Dean Wareham – Stories in High Fidelity

On August 4th Dean Wareham will be appearing at an event entitled Stories in High Fidelity at The Union Hall in Brooklyn, NY. The event is described as being “an evening of musical readings” and will feature contributions from other authors. Tickets are $10 in advance and are available from The Union Hall website.

Interview with Dean Wareham on Make Major Moves

Philadelphia Weekly’s music blog Make Major Moves has just posted part one of a long Q&A with Dean Wareham. Mostly discussing the writing process and content of Black Postcards…

I think at a certain point I realized that several people are going to be upset by this and by that, and if I went back and took out every thing that was going to upset somebody, it would just be a puff-piece and not a very interesting book. And I think part of the larger point I was trying to make about being in a band is that it’s all about conflict. And so I wanted to go into some of that conflict.

It’s hard to sing those songs, too. I feel like I need to cough, and I sing real high. Your voice naturally lowers as you get older, I think. And also, I didn’t know how to sing at all in Galaxie 500 [...] That’s absolutely part of the charm of it, when people say, you know, the vocals on the first Galaxie 500 album sound like I’m singing from outer space. I think I was thrown out there in front of a microphone and I’d never really been in that situation, I hadn’t practiced in front of a microphone, and I only got one take of everything. I’ve since learned that it’s on the third take that I start to get it good. It’s never the first. Sometimes the second. With vocals, that is.
