(not from the same show as the mp3!)

Last Friday night Dean & Britta performed a low key and sparsely attended show at The Grind in Clark University, Worcester MA. A kind soul (thanks Matt) sent me a recording of the show which included a nice mix of Dean & Britta, Luna, Galaxie 500 and a few of the songs from “13 Most Beautiful” one of which I now pass on to you. “I’ll Keep it With Mine” was written for Nico by Bob Dylana and Dean & Britta use it, obviously, to accompany Nico’s screen test.

  2. Like this version alot. Really love Bettie Serveert’s version from “I shot Andy Warhol”. I must say, any soundtrack that contains luna, yolatengo, pavement and wilco on it should be offically deemed an instant classic.

  4. Great, a real treat. I’m sorry I missed the live performances. Dean’s guitar is perfect.

  5. I only have a lossy version and to be honest bits of it are a touch messy – I’ll certainly put a few other choice tracks in the next couple of days.

  6. Andy, if you want me to help with the mastering, don’t hesitate!

  7. It boggles my mind that any Dean & Britta show would be only sparsely attended.

  8. Thanks Andy for making the whole show available. Despite the rough spots it’s got a nice sound for an audience recording. I’ve certainly heard worse.

  9. thank you!

not hard to believe it was sparsely populated, seeing how it was for students only. that’s one lucky university. but maaan, i wish they’d play a proper d&b solo show in massachusetts again sometime. i think the last one was in early 2008 (which i missed), then they opened for mercury rev in december (which i also missed), and then the 13 most beautiful performance last weekend. which was FANTASTIC, but i’m itching so bad to see the great mix of g500/luna/d&b material they perform in their usual headlining gigs (like the clark university set)

speaking of 13 most beautiful at the ica: has anyone found ANY press reviews of it? photos? i keep checking all the boston papers online but nothing…

  10. Hey- I’m the Matt of this show. Yeah- the sound is iffy at times, as despite using a quality Olympus pocket recorder, I was front and center with it. I’m sure I would have gotten better sound and less chatter if I positioned it in the back near the soundboard, though using the recorder was a last second idea. The recorder itself was sitting in my girlfriend’s purse, so there were of course flaws in that approach.

Oh if, anyone wants the loseless version, I’ll happily upload it. That version is a consistent 256kbps, while I made the emailed version VBR for a smaller file size. I didn’t do anything to remaster the recording, apart from the fade-in and outs at the beginning and end.

Anyways, the show was fantastic though, and yes, it was scarcely attended. No more than 50 there at the height of the evening. We couldn’t advertise it beyond campus due to the Boston show being the following day, and as this show was free, the ICA were concerned we could take away from their audience. The fact that it was pretty much only Clark students, and a few outsiders who found out about the show due to flyers around the campus area had much to do with the few attendees. I later found out there was a performance from a campus hip-hop dance team as well as a dance the same night, something which certainly took away some of the general student body. I wished it could have been promoted better, as yes, a full set by Dean & Britta in the area is a bit of a rarity. Still, those that were there all seemed to really enjoy it, and Dean was a pleasure to work with when booking the show. He’s easily one of the nicest musicians I have ever met.

  12. ohhh dear. This sent me straight to Sandy Denny.
And Dean, making fun of Dylan just doesn’t become you.
